5 Minutes with… Lynne Gray and Janelle Brooks

This week’s “5 Minutes with…” covers another fantastic pair of BHZ collaborators, Lynne Gray and Janelle Brooks. Lynne and Janelle are the owners and bakers of The Doughnut Bar in Weymouth. They helped create Objects of Confection No. 1, a Glazed Blueberry Doughnut Ale, and Objects of Confection No. 5, a Blackberry Jelly Doughnut Ale. Both ales were inspired by their amazing creations. The Doughnut Bar doughnuts are available every Sunday at Barrel House Z. Stop by for great beer and delicious homemade doughnuts, like Apple Cider, Coffee Crunch and more!

5 Minutes with ... Fitz + Michelle of New England Runner

Robert Fitzgerald (Fitz) and Michelle Le Brun publish New England Runner, a regional running magazine which, and we quote, “has been covering young and old, fast and slow, in the six New England states, NY and beyond since 1983.”

Fitz and Michelle purchased the magazine in 1998. Their endless enthusiasm has taken them to running events around the world.

We caught up with Fitz and Michelle at BHZ last week as they helped get things ready for the annual BHZ 5K on Sunday, August 29th.

Yes, there’s still time to sign up for Sunday’s race. But first, a few minutes with BHZ friends, Fitz and Michelle.

5 Minutes with ... Matt Wiley

There’s no doubt that head brewer Matt Wiley is the backbone of BHZ’s brewing team. He’s always thinking of ingredients, flavors, and technique and has helped create and brew some of our most memorable styles.

What’s your role at BHZ? Head brewer … been here about four or five months.

5 Minutes with ... Brian McLaughlin

If you have been following our series, you know we usually highlight BHZ team members, but today’s post is about a great friend and collaborator, Brian McLaughlin. Brian is the owner of Seabird Coffee Co. We’ve worked together on our iconic coffee-inspired beers: Joe Bird, Irish Hello, Karma Coast, Mas Mocha, and Magia del Campo.

Seabird is located in Cohasset’s village center with a second location opening soon in Scituate. As Brian describes it, Seabird provides a fun experience and quality coffee while simultaneously tying this small community together. We highly recommend checking Seabird out!

But Brian isn’t stopping there! He’s tapping into his love for Mexican food, and restaurant background, to open a new dining experience in Hingham: Locales Tacos y Tequila. Brian has a long history of working in Mexican-inspired restaurants when living in Arizona and California. He’s looking forward to bringing authentic Mexican cuisine to the South Shore. Grand opening date is yet to be announced, but we’re definitely excited to give Locales a try.

Now here’s 5 Minutes with … Brian McLaughlin

Where are you from originally? Long Island, New York.

What’s your relationship with BHZ? I was introduced to founder Russ Heissner by a friend when BHZ was looking to create a coffee-focused beer. Our first collab was such a great experience that we decided to keep going. I believe we’ve done five so far. I’m so happy and proud of the company that they are, and grateful that they chose to collaborate with Seabird.

What's the best part about collaborating with BHZ? The commonality that I have with Russ and Mary Heissner. Russ grew up in San Jose, and I opened a restaurant there in 2006. We have an East and West coast connection. Russ also has a breath of knowledge and passion for brewing. He is someone I can learn from. For me, the ease of working together is the best.

Favorite BHZ beer? Love the craft hard seltzers! I had never been a seltzer-drinker, I found most of them artificial tasting. Barrel House Z craft hard seltzers are amazing. I also love Stay Classy, which is a great take on the West Coast IPA. Guava Calling Fruited Blonde Ale is another fav.

Favorite non-BHZ beer? I love a Mexican lager, so Pacifico.

Favorite place to enjoy a beer? My back porch, with my kids playing in the backyard, looking out at the ocean, and listening to music.

Why should beer enthusiasts visit BHZ? If you’re a beer enthusiast, you’re interested in the brewing process and the creativity of brewer. BHZ does a great job at showcasing that, experimenting, and pushing boundaries.

What do you do outside of work/ in your free time? I have three daughters. Besides coaching them in lacrosse, I like to play lacrosse myself. I love spending time with my family. I also enjoy getting out in the water and trying to surf.

5 Minutes With ... Thom Doggett

Thom is a pretty recent BHZ hire. He only been on the production floor for about five month, but we’d be lost without him.

5 Minutes with Thom Doggett. Packaging beer is Thom’s domain. At BHZ, canning days are a long, pretty much solo affair. It takes a tough mindset to can beer by yourself all day. Thom tackles every day with gusto, always looking for ways to improve our process. Never letting a slight hiccup derail his plans. Thom has also started to learn how to operate in the cellar, and will be doing double duty between packaging and cellaring.

5 Minutes with ... Nate Malloy

5 Minutes with ... Nate Malloy

5 Minutes with Nate Malloy. Nate is our plucky, junior cellarman here at Barrel House Z.

He brings a positive attitude to everything he does. His days are filled with a wide array of jobs, all of which he does willingly, including laughing at our head brewer’s dumb jokes—which isn’t in the job description. Beer delivery is also part of his workload and recently, Nate stepped into cover accounts when needed. A full-time college student (not easy during the pandemic), Nate also puts in a 40-hour week. It’s fair to say that good, productive days at BHZ don’t happen without Nate. So, let’s learn a little bit more about him
